Do Schools Today Kill Creativity & Create Conformity?

I came across a thought-provoking (and humorous) speech given by Ken Robinson.  Robinson believes that the current education system stifles creativity and suppresses children’s individuality (in the interests of conformity).

He argues that there are many different forms of intelligence and that we should not force children to submit to narrowly defined standards of who is "intelligent" and who is "creative."  Funny and thought-provoking, this video emphasizes that children are unique—and a rigid, "one-size-fits-all" approach to education is a recipe for disaster.

I unexpectedly found myself, at age 45, with my first (and only) child. She will be 2yrs old on March 21, 2009. I dropped out of school in the 8th grade but, in my 20’s finally got my GED and later, in my late 20’s, earned a Para-Medic’s Degree, and was hired on the City of Hialeah (FL) Fire Dept. I want my daughter to ENJOY getting the best education I wish I could have had but I’m scared to death by the enormity of the undertaking I’m considering!

Hi Steve,

I had my youngest child at 43 (he was a surprise), so I can definitely relate. :-)   Almost everyone feels nervous when they first start homeschooling.  It’s normal.  Just take it one day at a time, research curriculum, and get feedback from your daughter.  Make sure you understand—and follow—the homeschool laws in your state.

One of the best things about homeschooling is that you can customize your daughter’s education based on her natural interests and talents.  See if there are any homeschool support groups in your area.  Support groups are a great way to meet other homeschooling families, and get encouragement along the way.  Good luck to you!

Conformity is becoming more and more popular in schools. its a fact. i myself as a student have experienced this first hand. i am now homeschooled and minus the lack of socialization, i am very happy. i dont have to conform to any rules or ways of learning, and if i do go back to school it will have been researched upon that way i will not have a bad experience as i have before.
